    Vocalise Project

In December of 2011, Robert discovered a collection of Vocalise-Etudes written for students of the Paris Conservatory by the top composers of the day. Copland, Messiaen, Ravel, Villa-Lobos, Nielsen, and Faure (among many others) all wrote vocalises for the collection. The intent was to expose students to singing in the "modern" style--something the bel canto vocalises of Bordogni and Concone are ill-equipped to handle. Pending approval from Alphonse Leduc, Robert will be publishing a collection of 10-20 of these vocalises transcribed for euphonium and piano.

    CD Project

Just released in March 2012, Robert’s debut CD, MIRRORS, features many brand new works for euphonium in a variety of media! New works by Peter Meechan, Jonathan Newman, Joel Puckett, and Steven Bryant are the core of the piece with a couple of familiar favorites.

    Commission Projects:

Monkey to the Sky by Ricardo Lorenz (2011)

The name comes from a mistranslation of a Central American poem, ‘monos pal cielo. This 12-minute piece is a chamber concerto of sorts. The instrumentation is identical to the Janacek Capriccio, except the euphonium, rather than the piano, is the soloist. Ricardo Lorenz, a Venezuelan composer turned out to be the perfect composer to exploit the Latin tendencies of the flute, two trumpets, three trombones and piano, behind the euphonium soloist. The commission was funded by a world-wide consortium of performers and university band programs. The performer-contributors were: Robert Benton, Jamie Lipton, Pat Stuckemeyer, Cale Self, Hidenori Arai, Adam Frey, Ken Kroesche, Tormod Flaten and Fritz Kaenzig. The schools that contributed were: University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan University, Oakland University and the Royal Northern College of Music. It was premiered by Robert on May 4th, 2011 at the University of Michigan.

    Hummingbrrrd by Steven Bryant (2011)

This fun little encore piece was commissioned by Robert for inclusion on his debut CD, BLUE. This piece is for euphonium and CD accompaniment and was premiered at the Midwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference in Mt. Pleasant, MI on March 4th 2011.

JET A by Peter Meechan (2010)

When sitting in an airplane waiting for takeoff, Robert looked out the window and saw a fuel truck with the words, JET A printed in big black letters on its side. This sparked an idea about a fast fun work with jet fuel as its main idea. He knew Peter Meechan would be the perfect person to write the piece, and so asked him to write it for his first CD. It is a short piece for euphonium and electronics, and was given its live premiere by David Thornton in the Summer of 2011.

Infinite Morning by Joel Puckett (2009)

This wonderfully beautiful addition to the repertoire is 7 minutes long, and for euphonium and piano. Half-valve ‘euphonium sighs’ are the core element of the work and the music is stunning. This piece was commissioned by a consortium of performers from all over the world. The contributors to this stunning work were: Robert Benton, Jamie Lipton, Benjamin Pierce, Matt Tropman, Matt Van Emmerik, Danny Helseth, Pat Stuckemeyer, Hidenori Arai, Brian Meixner and Ken Kroesche. It was premiered by Robert on February 5th, 2009 on campus at Michigan State Unviersity. To get the music for this piece, feel free to contact the composer at www.joelpuckett.com.
